The Ostrich That Forgot Its Own Kind
A Devotional on Imprinting and Spiritual Identity
In animal behavior science, there is a fascinating phenomenon called imprinting. Certain animals, especially birds, form deep attachments during a critical early stage of life. Whoever they consistently follow, depend on, and remain close to can begin shaping their sense of identity, safety, and belonging.
This has created unusual challenges on some ostrich farms. When male ostriches are heavily hand raised by humans and spend too little time around other ostriches, some begin directing courtship behaviors and emotional attachment toward their caretakers instead of female ostriches. Farmers have observed dancing displays, territorial behavior, and bonding directed toward humans rather than their own species.
The ostrich did not consciously choose confusion. It simply became shaped by what surrounded it most during its formative stage.
That truth reaches far beyond animal behavior.
Human beings are also shaped by what they stay closest to. The voices we absorb, the environments we live in, the people we admire, and the habits we repeat gradually influence our identity. Over time, fear, pride, anger, approval, ambition, or worldly thinking can quietly begin shaping the heart more than God does.
Scripture warns about this kind of silent transformation. Romans 12:2 says:
“Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind.”
The ostrich’s misplaced attachment happened because its environment continually reinforced the wrong identity. In the same way, when people spend little time in God’s presence but constant time surrounded by destructive influences, spiritual clarity can slowly become distorted.
But there is hope.
God specializes in restoring identity. Jesus continually called people back to who they were truly created to be. The Christian life is not simply about changing behavior. It is about remembering who we belong to.
Healthy spiritual growth requires closeness to God through prayer, Scripture, worship, and godly fellowship. The more time spent with Christ, the clearer purpose, identity, and direction become.
Take a moment to reflect on what has been shaping your heart lately, which voices influence your thinking most, and whether your life is becoming more shaped by Christ or by the world around you.
Prayer
Lord, help me recognize the influences shaping my heart and mind. Remove anything that pulls me away from Your truth and renew my spirit through Your presence. Teach me to find my identity in You instead of the pressures of the world. Surround me with wisdom, godly influence, and spiritual clarity so that my life reflects Your purpose. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
