The Night the Headlights Became Runway Lights
When ordinary people unite in a moment of need, God often does extraordinary things.

In the remote village of Igiugig, Alaska, where fewer than 70 people call home, a medical emergency unfolded on a dark night in September 2020. A child needed urgent medical care, and a medevac aircraft was attempting to land. There was only one problem: the runway lights had failed.
As the aircraft circled overhead, villagers quickly realized the seriousness of the situation. There was no time to wait for repairs. Within minutes, neighbors began making phone calls. Residents grabbed their vehicles, ATVs, and trucks and drove to the airstrip. About twenty vehicles lined the runway, their headlights shining into the darkness, creating a makeshift landing strip.
Young and old responded. Some were as young as eight years old; others were in their seventies. Together they illuminated the path the pilot needed to land safely. The aircraft touched down, the child was loaded aboard, and the plane departed for medical treatment. What could have been a tragedy became a story of hope because an entire community chose to work together.
Biblical Reflection
The people of Igiugig remind us of an important biblical truth: God often works through people who are willing to show up and help. No single resident could have illuminated the entire runway alone. It took everyone contributing what they had, a vehicle, a phone call, a willingness to serve.
The Apostle Paul described the church in a similar way. He taught that believers are like parts of one body. Each person has a role, and every role matters. When one person is hurting, others come alongside to help. When one person is in need, God often provides through the hands and hearts of His people.
In moments of crisis, it is easy to think we have little to offer. We may not have the expertise, resources, or influence to solve a problem. Yet God frequently uses simple acts of obedience and compassion. A phone call, a prayer, an encouraging word, a meal, a ride, or a helping hand may become the very thing that lights someone’s path through a dark season.
Just as those headlights guided a plane carrying a child to safety, our willingness to serve can become a beacon of hope for someone who desperately needs it. We may never fully know the impact of our small contribution, but God does.
Scripture Now
“Carry each other’s burdens, and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ.” — Galatians 6:2 (NIV)
Take the Next Step
Ask God to show you someone who may be struggling today. Look for a practical way to help, a text message, a visit, a prayer, an offer of assistance, or simply listening. Don’t underestimate what God can do through a small act of kindness. When believers work together, they become lights that guide others toward hope.
Prayer
God,
Thank You for creating us to live in community. Help us to notice the needs around us and respond with compassion and courage. Show us how to use what we have, no matter how small it may seem, to help others. Make us willing to be a light in someone’s darkness and a source of encouragement when hope feels distant. Use our collective efforts to reflect Your love and bring glory to You.
In the name of Jesus Christ.
