The Bees That Survived Notre-Dame
A Devotional About Quiet Preservation

When the fire tore through Notre-Dame Cathedral in 2019, the world watched in shock as flames consumed one of history’s most beloved cathedrals. The wooden roof collapsed, smoke billowed into the sky, and many feared priceless treasures had been lost forever. But days later, an astonishing discovery emerged from the ashes: the 180,000 bees living in three hives on the cathedral’s sacristy roof had survived.
The bees had not fled. They had not panicked. Hidden below the main blaze, they endured.
Scientists and beekeepers explained that bees react to smoke very differently from humans. Because they do not have lungs, smoke does not destroy them the same way it harms us. Instead, smoke calms them. Feeling threatened, bees instinctively consume honey and become still, entering a protective state rather than scattering in chaos. The very thing that looked deadly became part of what preserved them.
That image carries a profound spiritual lesson.
There are seasons when life feels like Notre-Dame in flames. Dreams collapse. Stability disappears. Fear spreads through every corner of the mind. In those moments, many people assume God has abandoned them because they cannot see immediate rescue. Yet Scripture repeatedly shows that God often preserves His people quietly, beneath the visible disaster.
The bees survived not because there was no fire, but because they were positioned where the flames could not ultimately consume them.
Faith works like that.
God does not promise believers a life without heat, pressure, or storms. But He does promise His presence within them. Sometimes preservation is happening in places invisible to everyone else. While others only see destruction, God sees endurance. While the world expects collapse, God sustains life underneath the smoke.
Even more remarkable is the bees’ instinct to draw near to their stored honey during danger. Spiritually, believers must do the same. In crisis, we often search for escape first, but God invites us to return to the sweetness of His Word, His promises, and His presence. What sustains you in peace is what strengthens you in fire.
The enemy wants panic to scatter your faith. God wants trust to anchor it.
Isaiah wrote of a faith that survives flames not because believers are strong, but because God remains near:
“When thou walkest through the fire, thou shalt not be burned; neither shall the flame kindle upon thee.”
The fire at Notre-Dame became a global tragedy, but hidden within it was a quieter testimony: life preserved where no one expected it.
Perhaps that is true for you right now.
You may feel surrounded by smoke, uncertainty, or loss. Yet if your life is rooted in Christ, God is still capable of protecting what others assume is finished. The flames may touch the structure around you, but they cannot destroy the soul held in His hands.
Bible Verses
Isaiah 43:2
“When thou passest through the waters, I will be with thee; and through the rivers, they shall not overflow thee: when thou walkest through the fire, thou shalt not be burned.”
Psalm 91:4
“He shall cover thee with his feathers, and under his wings shalt thou trust.”
2 Corinthians 4:8–9
“We are troubled on every side, yet not distressed; we are perplexed, but not in despair; Persecuted, but not forsaken; cast down, but not destroyed.”
Take the Next Step
Ask yourself:
What “fire” in my life is causing fear right now?
Am I reacting with panic or with trust?
What promises from God can I cling to in this season?
Spend time this week reading one chapter of Scripture each day before checking news or social media. Let God’s voice become louder than the smoke around you.
Prayer
Heavenly Father,
When the fires of life rise around me, help me remain still in Your presence and trust in Your protection. Strengthen my heart when fear tries to overwhelm me, and remind me that You are able to preserve what seems impossible to save. Fill me with peace, faith, and courage today.
In Jesus’ name, Amen.
