More Than One Horsepower - Strength Beyond the Name
There is greater power within you than you realize
We often use the term “horsepower” to describe the strength of engines, but interestingly, a real horse can produce far more than just one horsepower. The unit “horsepower” was originally coined by James Watt in the 18th century to compare steam engines to the work of draft horses. He estimated one horsepower as about 746 watts.
But in reality, a horse’s strength far exceeds that baseline. Studies, including one in 1993, have shown that a horse can briefly generate up to 18,000 watts, around 24 horsepower, especially during bursts of intense effort like sprinting or pulling heavy loads. In other words, the name “horsepower” actually understates the true potential of the animal it was named after!
This reminds us of a deeper truth: sometimes what defines us externally doesn’t fully capture what we’re capable of internally.
The Bible reflects this idea in Ephesians 3:20:
“Now to Him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to His power that is at work within us.”
Just as a horse holds far more strength than its name suggests, God’s power in our lives often goes beyond what we expect or understand. We may feel limited by labels, past experiences, or even our own doubts, but God sees a deeper strength and purpose within us.
Personal Reflection:
Where might you be underestimating what God can do through you? Consider areas where you’ve settled for “just enough,” when perhaps there is greater strength waiting to be discovered. Trust that God’s power is not limited by your expectations.
May you walk today with quiet confidence, knowing that what is within you, through God, is greater than what you see on the surface.
